Marine Alfonso Ochoa Jr. killed in Afghanistan

A 20-year-old Kane'ohe-based Marine was killed Saturday in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced yesterday.

Lance Cpl. Alfonso Ochoa Jr. of Armona, Calif., died while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan's Farah province. Ochoa was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Ochoa was a graduate of Hanford West High School in Hanford, Calif., according to KMPH-TV in Fresno.

Ochoa joined the Marine Corps on Jan. 13, 2008, and reported to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment on July 20, 2008. His awards include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
