19th-ranked Hilo improves to 19-1

Kawena Cubi-Otineru had 10 kills as No. 19 Hawai'i-Hilo beat Notre Dame de Namur, 25-14, 25-13, 25-23, last night in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match at Hilo.

Morgan Bonney and Leilani Ramsey each had seven kills for the Vulcans (19-1, 9-1), who hit .373. Alayna Galeai had six kills and four digs for the Argonauts (8-15, 5-4).

Also in the PacWest:

• Kelly Balanay had 18 kills, Mariana Souza 11 and Julia Gruszecka 10 as Hawai'i Pacific (9-9, 6-3) beat Grand Canyon (12-8, 2-6), 25-16, 25-22, 25-20, at St. Andrew's Priory gym. Megan Toth had 11 kills for the Antelopes,

• Whitney Viveiros had 15 kills and 13 digs, and Kylee Pedro added 13 kills and 10 digs as Chaminade (4-16, 2-8) beat Dominican (4-17, 0-8), 25-18, 25-8, 25-16, at McCabe gym. Gabby Pecora had eight kills for the Penguins.

SWIMMING

WAC HONORS FOR BERRY, BOCKSNICK

University of Hawai'i senior Emma Berry and freshman Hanna Bocksnick are the Western Athletic Conference swimmer and diver of the week.

Berry, from Norman, Okla., won three individual events and was a member of a winning relay team as Hawai'i went 5-0 in dual meets at last week's WAC Shootout. She opened the season with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.01), added a win in the 500 free (5:04.38) and swam the second leg on the team that won the 200 free relay (1:36.45) on Friday. On Saturday, Berry won the 200 free (1:53.73), finished third in the 500 free (5:07.98) and also led off the 400 free relay team that took third (3:33.60).

Bocksnick, from Edmonton, Canada, made her college debut with three victories at the WAC Shootout. Friday, she scored 280.35 points on the 1-meter board for the victory and placed third at 3 meters with 256.15 points. On Saturday, she again claimed victory on the 1-meter with 278.20 points and also captured the 3-meter with a score of 283.65.

HILO MEN TURN BACK DOMINICAN IN OT

George Ichimaru scored on a header four minutes into overtime as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Dominican, 2-1, yesterday in a men's soccer match at San Rafael, Calif.

Vincent Muscarella also scored for the Vulcans (6-7, 5-2). Rafael Garcia scored for the Penguins (5-7-1, 2-4-1).

On the winning goal, Tim Glick's shot hit a defender and bounced high into the air. Ichimaru tracked the ball and headed it into the goal from about 8 yards.

Also in the PacWest:

• Jessica Snell scored in the 51st minute as Hawai'i-Hilo (3-7-3, 2-3-2) played Dominican (4-6-3, 2-3-2) to a 1-1 tie in two overtimes of a women's match at San Rafael, Calif.

• Jorge Serrano scored two goals as Notre Dame de Namur (6-8-1, 6-1-1) beat Chaminade (2-8-0, 1-6-0), 5-0, in a men's match at Belmont, Calif.

• Kimberly Wilhite scored two goals as Notre Dame de Namur (5-8, 5-3) beat Chaminade (0-10, 0-7) in a women's match at Belmont, Calif. Haley Miller scored for the Silverswords.

TENNIS

UH OPENS PLAY AT SOUTHWEST REGIONAL

The University of Hawaii men's team opens play in the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Championships today at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. The tournament runs through Tuesday.

There are nine regional tournaments across the country, with each having a singles and doubles main draw with consolation play. Southwest teams are Arizona, USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, San Diego State, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Riverside and Hawai'i.

UH's Andreas Weber, Dennis Lajola, Dmytro Kovalyov and Philipp Eberhard received first-round byes and begin singles play tomorrow. Daniel Larenas, Jeremy Tweedt and Leo Rosenberg open today.

Lajola is No. 49 and Weber No. 119 in the ITA preseason rankings. In doubles, Lajola and Tweedt are ranked No. 49.
