TENNIS

HOLUA WILL HOST INTERISLAND

The revival of the Interisland Tennis Championships will be held at Holua Tennis Center, Nov. 6 to 8.

The event was first held in the 1900s, took a few breaks and, with the help of Ron Seno and Hattie Somerville, reappeared in the early '90s at Royal Waikoloan. The Big Island won the last title in 1993, edging O'ahu and Maui.

The event has a regular tournament draw, with individuals also accumulating points for their island. There are individual event winners and an overall Island winner.

The tournament has men's, women's and mixed doubles for 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 and Open divisions, plus a 65-older division. Entry fees are $20 per event and $35 for two events. Entries close Nov. 2. Fees include a player party Saturday night.

"This tournament has a great history in the Islands and we thought it was time to bring it back," said Tournament Director Cheryl Shrum. "When the tournament first started, players traveled by steam ships and cane trains to get to the event, often taking a half a day or longer. So not only does it have that kind of history behind it, but it was also treated as the Davis Cup of the Islands. The players get really involved in rooting for their island, creating a lot of fun and camaraderie."

Entry forms are available at local clubs. For more information, call 808-329-8504.

WOMEN'S NIGHT DOUBLES

Organizers are hoping to double the draw to 16 teams for the 10th annual Island Design Center Women's Night Doubles tennis tournament, Nov. 18 to 21 at Kailua Racquet Club.

Proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Teams that have already committed include Anastasia Agaychick and Lauren Shin, Aleksandra Stankovic and Sandra Wikstrom, and Ingrid Cseh and Zora Vickova.

Matches begin at 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. the first three nights. The final is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Admission is free and food will be available for purchase.
