Brent Anbe's 'Ajumma!' is a hit among HIFF fans

By Wayne Harada

Hawaii filmmaker Brent Anbe's comedic tribute to die-hard K-drama fans, "Ajumma! Are You Krazy???," has had terrific buzz at the Hawaii International Film Festival, now under way. Ajumma (Korean for older women) are the legions of moms, aunts and office workers who are K-drama fanatics, but real-life worshippers will find joy and warmth in this first local "kim chee comedy," written and directed by Anbe, a Hawaii Film Office specialist. "The onscreen chemistry of our lead actors was incredible, and made my editing job even harder, since they delivered such great performances," says Anbe of his local indie stars. Thea Matsuda tried out to be an extra but was so natural that Anbe cast her as Judy, one of the ajummas (the others include Tessie Magaoay as Susan and Cari Mizumoto as Amy), who go gung ho over Michael Hsia as K-drama hottie Michael Park.

The film premiered last night at the Regal Dole Cannery, home of HIFF this week, but a second performance is set for 11:15 a.m. Oct. 25. See the trailer at www.ajummamovie.com or check out Oceanic Time Warner's NGN-On-Demand channel 680. ...

WORDS 'N' MUSIC: The Diamond Head Theatre gang was thrilled by Lisa Lambert's presence at last Sunday's closing performance of "The Drowsy Chaperone." Lambert co-wrote of all the music and lyrics for the Tony Award-winning musical. And John Rampage was spot-on perfection as Man in Chair, the host of the living room that becomes the showcase for his imaginative reflection, with stellar energy and vocals drawn by visiting director James Patterson from all his leads — Yvonne Iversen as the tipsy character, Jim Price as the hysterical Adolpho, Madison Eror as the bride Janet and Kyle Malis as the groom — right on down to the ensemble. "Drowsy" was wowsy, and betcha Lambert left town with great buzz to share. ...
