Sooners QB out for game with Kansas

Associated Press

Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford has been ruled out of No. 25 Oklahoma's game this week at 24th-ranked Kansas, but coach Bob Stoops says any decision beyond that is yet to come.

"I think the fair thing to say is right now, he's not going to play this week," Stoops said last night after the Sooners' practice. "I just assumed everyone understood that. From there, the path hasn't been determined yet."

Bradford re-injured his right shoulder on Oklahoma's second possession during a 16-13 loss to No. 3 Texas on Saturday. The quarterback had previously been out a month with a sprain of the AC joint in his right, throwing shoulder.

Stoops said Bradford would be visiting with doctors and his family over the next few days, and he didn't expect to have an update on Bradford until at least Wednesday or Thursday.

Bradford had been projected as an early NFL draft pick, but decided instead to return for his junior season with the Sooners. He was injured just before halftime against BYU and missed Oklahoma's next three games before returning to throw for 389 yards against Baylor.

He was hurt again when Texas cornerback Aaron Williams sacked him in the first quarter Saturday.

CONNECTICUT

ARREST TO BE MADE IN DEATH OF PLAYER

A Bloomfield man will be arrested in the stabbing death of a University of Connecticut football player, his lawyer said last night, as police continued to sort out what happened during a fight outside a school-sponsored dance over the weekend.

Attorney Deron Freeman declined to identify his client, but says the man and several others got into a fight "with about six" UConn football players early Sunday. Freeman says his client did not stab Jasper Howard, but was present when Howard, a junior and starting cornerback, was mortally wounded.

Freeman said police searched his client's home in Bloomfield and removed some items. Freeman said police told him that his client and others will be arrested.

It would be the second arrest connected to the stabbing. Johnny Hood, 21, of Hartford, was arraigned yesterday on charges of interfering with an officer and breach of peace, but he has not been charged in Howard's death.

ELSEWHERE

Cincinnati: Tony Pike was back at practice yesterday with a cast on his left forearm, an indication that No. 5 Cincinnati may not be without its starting quarterback for long. Coach Brian Kelly plans to let him practice this week, then decide whether he will play against Louisville (2-4) on Saturday. The senior was hurt late in the first half of a 34-17 win at South Florida on Thursday night.

Texas: Texas quarterback Colt McCoy says he plans to play Saturday against Missouri, despite a bruised right thumb that will likely lose its nail. McCoy hurt his throwing hand in the second quarter of the win Saturday over No. 25 Oklahoma. He struggled through one of the worst passing games of his career, completing 21 of 40 for 127 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
