The murder trial of a 32-year-old Ewa Beach man began in state court this morning with a prosecutor accusing Patrick Deguair Jr. of the “execution-style” slaying of Jermaine Duckworth in March 2008.

Deguair (pronounced de-GARE) “accused Duckworth of ratting or squealing to police” about a November 2007 Waianae home invasion robbery the two men allegedly helped commit, Deputy Prosecutor Scott Bell told the jury.
Deguair bound and gagged Duckworth with duct tape, drove to the end of the Leeward Coast at Kaena Point and shot the victim in the back of the head before pushing the body off a shoreline cliff, Bell said.
“This case is about an execution,” said Bell.
But defense attorney Neal Kugiya said the prosecution’s main witness in the case, David Teo, is the killer.
“The most relevant evidence does not point to Patrick Deguair,” Kugiya said in his opening statement.
Teo, 46, is a co-defendant with Deguair in the April 2008 armed robbery of an Aiea pool hall. He has pleaded guilty to robbery and gun charges in that case and is in protective custody awaiting sentencing. Deguair’s trial in that case will be held later.
