Crowds at Oahu’s “high traffic” city and county beach parks, such as Sandy Beach and Waimea Bay, were comparable to those seen on weekends and holidays, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department which includes the Ocean Safety Division.

“It was nothing out of the ordinary,” Cheplic said of the number of beach-goers on the first furlough Friday.
Even waves with five- to eight-foot faces on the North Shore failed to attract more than the typical number of school-age surfers seen on weekends, Cheplic said.
“We’re staffed accordingly,” he said.
Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman Michelle Yu said police were monitoring the furlough situation but had not made any changes to normal staffing levels in anticipation of problems stemming from the furlough.
No incidents thought to be related to the furlough had been reported during the morning and early afternoon hours, police said.
