International celebrities converge for HIFF

The Hawaii International FilmFestival yeah, we're still talking about it will never be confused with the Maui Film Festival when it comes to bringing in celebrities for world premieres and screenings.
Two different audiences, with Maui built more for Hollywood and HIFF for more of an international crowd. It doesn't make either less or more attractive, it's just what they are.
So, as HIFF and its 180 films wraps up this weekend, we're using our Etc. space to drop a few names of some not all of the special guests who graced O'ahu during HIFF.
Maggie Q. Friends who grew up with her in Mililani may know her better as Margaret Denise Quigley, supermodel turned rising international star. She's back in town to receive HIFF's 2009 Maverick Award Saturday and is starring in the closing night film, "The Warrior and The Wolf." She's also going to be in "New York, I Love You,""King of Fighters, "Priest" and "Rogue's Gallery"(written by local boy Bryan Watanabe). She was previously in "Mission Impossible III" with Tom Cruise. A hotter international actress you will not find.
Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. They are the creative team behind"Lost." Also showing up from the hit ABC series were Daniel Dae Kim and Ken Leung. If you're new to O'ahu, Kim can also often be found at his tasty Kδhala burger joint, The Counter. (Hint: Get the sweet-potato fries).
Q'orianka Kilcher, who portrayed Princess Ka'iulani (wonderfully, we might add) in "Barbarian Princess."
Zhang Jingchu, actresss in four HIFF films: "Beast Stalker," "Overheard," "Red River" and "Invisible Killer." Hopefully, she mixed in a vacation while she was here.
Karin Anna Cheung and Archie Kao from "The People I've Slept With."
Hiroshi Watanabe, "White on Rice" and Clint Eastwood's "Letters from Iwo Jima."
Legendary Chinese director Li Qiankuan and wife/co-director Xiao Qui-yun, who came in for the world premiere of "Xinghai."
Nick Cheung, actor from "Beast Stalker" and "Red River."
Another person returning home for HIFF is Moanalua High School grad Eric Byler. Now a filmmaker, he returned for the premiere of his politically charged documentary "9500 Liberty," which screens again at 1:15 p.m. today.
North Shore's most beloved singer/songwriter/environmentalist, Jack Johnson, is doing his best to put on true hometown concerts Nov. 13 and Nov. 14 at Hawai'i Theatre.
He could easily sell out a bigger venue, but the 1,600-seat theater is perfect for him to screen his new DVD documentary "En Concert" and play an acoustic set from his new CD. The really cool part? All tickets have to be bought the old-fashioned way, in person at the Hawaii Theatre box office Saturday morning. So, yes, you may have to stand in line to get yours, but at least you're not fighting fans online from all over the world for limited seating, and scalpers can only get two at a time, just like everyone else
