Punahou, HBA earn No. 1 seeds in state volleyball

Punahou and Hawai'i Baptist earned the top seeds for this week's New City Nissan/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Girls Volleyball Championships.
Punahou (19-0), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, is the top seed in Division I and opens play in Thursday's quarterfinals against the winner of the Farrington-Roosevelt match at McKinley
O'ahu Interscholastic champion Kahuku (15-1) is seeded second, followed by No. 3 Waiakea (16-0), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, and No. 4 Kamehameha-Maui (12-0), the Maui Interscholastic League champion.
First-round matches start on Wednesday at Radford and McKinley. Saturday's matches will be at the Stan Sheriff Center. The championship match is at 7 p.m.
Two-time state champion Hawai'i Baptist (18-2) is the top seed in Division II. The Eagles, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, play the winner of the Waimea-Kailua match in Thursday's quarterfinals at Farrington.
Seeded second is Moloka'i (14-0), the Maui Interscholastic League champion. O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion Kaiser (13-3) is seeded third and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Hilo (13-4) is fourth.
First-round matches start on Wednesday at Kalani and Farrington. Saturday's matches will be at the Stan Sheriff Center. The championship match is at 5 p.m.
