MAKENA, Maui — Former Olympic triathletes Eneko Llanos of Spain and defending champ Julie Dibens of England won Sunday's XTERRA World Championship, a triathlon that combines a mile ocean swim with 20 miles of mountain biking and a 7-mile run over lava and sand.

The 32-year-old Llanos finished the race on and off Maui's coast in 2 hours, 37 minutes, 22 seconds — 55 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Nicolas Lebrun of France. It was Llanos' third XTERRA title, but his first since winning back-to-back in 2003 and '04.

The 34-year-old Dibens clinched her third consecutive win with a time of 2:56:42, more than 7 minutes ahead of runner-up Lesley Paterson of Scotland. Dibens led from start to finish and is the first athlete, male or female, to win the race three times in a row.

Llanos' time also won him the Hawaiian Airlines Double award, which goes to the male triathlete with the fastest combined time in the XTERRA and the 140.6-mile Ironman triathlon. Llanos finished 14th at the Ironman World Championship two weeks ago.

Dibens and Llanos each won $20,000.

Llano competed as a triathlete for Spain in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. Dibens was a member of Britain's triathlon team in 2004.
