Review by students weakens authority
By John Rosemond
Q. My kindergartener brought home a questionnaire that asks: Do you like your class? Do you have friends in your class? Does your teacher treat you like you want to be treated? Does your teacher help you learn and do new things? I'm supposed to read him the questions, then he colors in a face with a smile, a neutral expression, or a frown. I think this exercise undermines respect for the teacher. Should I refuse to let him do it?
A. Effective teaching is not a popularity contest and letting students rate teachers undermines teacher authority and student respect.
Find the source of the questionnaire and talk to that person, then the press if your complaint is ignored.
