Kauai may begin charging fee for home trash pickup

Advertiser Staff

Kauai County officials said they are considering charging a fee for residential trash pickup.

There will also be an increase in county sewer fees in the near future, said Gary Heu, Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.'s administrative assistant, and Wally Rezentes Jr., county finance director.

Their remarks came Friday morning at a county Police Commission meeting at the Historic County Building. Commissioners requested a briefing on the financial outlook for the county.

Heu said county leaders face much financial uncertainty as they begin getting ready for preparation of the annual county budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

Rezentes said county leaders "painfully" increased tipping fees for commercial trash accepted at the Kekaha Landfill, fares for riding The Kaua'i Bus, and fees for playing at Wailua Golf Course.

They are now considering lowering the cost for visitors playing Wailua Golf Course, after a recent fee increase was determined to have reduced play there by visitors.

Heu said there hasn't been much reduction in ridership on The Kaua'i Bus since the fare increase, but Rezentes said Department of Parks and Recreation and Wailua Golf Course leaders heard from visiting golfers that the fee increase there resulted in reduced play and complaints from visitors.

Rezentes said Kaua'i is the only county without a convenience charge attached to online bill-paying, and institution of that charge in January is expected to generate $300,000.
