Viliami Pasi scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 27 seconds left to rally top-ranked Kahuku to a 19-14 win over No. 8 Castle last night in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Division Tournament semifinal at Aloha Stadium.
The Red Raiders (10-0) forced five Castle turnovers and got five sacks — four in the first half — from defensive end Hauoli Jamora to remain the state's lone Division I unbeaten team and advance to Friday's Red Conference championship game against the winner of last night's late semifinal between Leilehua and Farrington.
The Knights (6-5) got 130 receiving yards on 13 catches from standout receiver Shaydon Kehano, but were just 3-of-16 on third downs.
"We worked hard to get here," Jamora said. "We've had a lot of close games, now we have to get ready for one more."
Castle pulled to within two points with 5:10 left in the third quarter after Jaymason Lee found Kehano for a 22-yard touchdown pass, followed by a muddle-huddle rush by Garrett Paredes for the two-point conversion, to make it 13-11.
Kahuku went three-and-out on its ensuing drive after Castle's Cy Pana sacked quarterback Evan Moe for an 8-yard loss on third down, forcing a punt.
The Knights got the ball back at the Kahuku 49-yard line and drove down to the 27, where they opted for the go-ahead field goal. Derek Hillegass, who already hit a 35-yarder in the second quarter, converted on the 44-yard attempt with three seconds left in the third quarter to put Castle ahead, 14-13.
Castles Moses Alimoot made his second interception of the game midway through the fourth quarter, but the Knights were forced to punt with about 2:30 to play.
Kahuku promptly moved the ball downfield after starting at the Castle 45. Moe completed four consecutive passes and Fonoivasa Mataafa's 16-yard run up the middle gave the Red Raiders first-and-goal from the 7.
Pasi picked up 4 yards on first down and Mataafa lunged forward for another on second to leave third-and-goal from the 1. Following a timeout, Kahuku used a double-tight end, I-formation to pound the ball into the end zone with Pasi going behind right guard Tevita Tonga.
Castle got the ball back with 26 seconds to play, but couldn't cross midfield as time expired.
Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said Pasi, who did not play in the first half last night or in last week's quarterfinal game against Mililani, was coming off a knee injury.
"We kept him out as much as we could," Torres said. "We didn't want to use him if we didn't have to, but in the second half, we had no choice. When he did come in, he gave us a big spark."
The Red Raiders' ground attack was stymied in the first half as they were held to 28 yards on 15 rushes and one rushing first down. They finished with 82 yards on 30 rushes. Pasi led all players with 41 yards on seven attempts.
Kahuku got a pair of field goals from Cameron Mercado in the first quarter to go ahead 6-0. The Red Raiders led 6-3 at halftime and extended their lead on an 82-yard interception return for touchdown by T.J. Tito early in the third quarter. Mercado's extra point made it 13-3.
"Our coaches told us that we needed to bring the heat and that's what we did," said Jamora, whose five sacks totalled losses of 39 yards for Castle. Two of his sacks came on third down.
Kahuku beat Castle, 30-6, in a regular season game on Oct. 10.
