Legendary indigenous musicians performing in Hilo and Honolulu
By Mike Gordon
The Native Voices Tour presents two legendary performers from America’s indigenous peoples — Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai and Hawaiian slack key master guitarist Keola Beamer — in a pair of shows in Hilo and Honolulu.
The pair will perform their first concert at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 in Hilo’s Palace Theatre. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $12.50 for children 12 and under. For information, call 934-7010.
Their second concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 in the Hawaii Theatre. Special guest Calvin Hoe, a percussionist, will perform. Tickets are $30. For information, call: 528-0506.
Long regarded as trend-setting musicians and articulate spokesmen for their cultures, Nakai and Beamer will be appearing together to promote their award-winning CD "Our Beloved Land" (Canyon Records). Their performances will include music played on Native American flutes, Hawaiian nose flutes, slack key guitar and chanting and native percussion from both cultures.
