A bracelet that once belonged to Queen Liliuokalani — recently purchased and donated to the Friends of Iolani Palace by Abigail Kawananakoa — will be installed in the Palace Gallery for public viewing today.
The bracelet’s return comes on the eve of Liliuokalani’s birthday — Sept. 2, 1838.
It is an early example of the Hawaiian heirloom jewelry worn today. Its textured surface is embellished with the phrase “hoomanao mau,” or “lasting memory.”
According to a news release from the Friends, it was Liliuokalani’s wish that her jewelry be sold upon her death and the proceeds used to establish an orphanage.
The “hoomanao mau” bracelet and another marked “R. Naiu” were auctioned for $105 in 1924.
