9 teams to nationals

Nine teams from the Hawai'i Pacific Section advanced to national finals of the largest adult recreational tennis league in the world by winning the USTA Adult League HPS Championships recently at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

The USTA League has more than 706,000 players across the nation. It was established to provide adult recreational players an opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels.

Players participate on teams in a league format by using six National Tennis Rating Program levels, ranging from 2.5 (entry) to 5.0 (advanced).

The winning teams, and where they are headed for nationals:

2.5: Women—Potpourri, O'ahu (Captain PJ Ellison). Oct. 9 to 11 at Indian Wells, Calif.

3.0: Women—MD Wenokea, O'ahu (Karen Nose); Men—McCully Ducks, O'ahu (Dean Yamashiro). Oct. 9 to 11 at Tucson, Ariz.

3.5: Women—Tennis Menace, O'ahu (Gaye Hirata); Men—Village Park Comeback (Fidel Hufana). Oct. 16 to 18 at Tucson, Ariz.

4.0: Women—Howard Tacub Tennis, O'ahu (Charlene Matsuno); Men—Weak Sauce (Michael Young). Oct. 2 to 4 at Las Vegas.

4.5: Women—Jus4Fun, O'ahu (Holly Toguchi); Men—Bonus, O'ahu (Mark Cayetano). Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 at Las Vegas.

CLINIC FOR JUNIORS SET

Hawaiian Isles Tennis Foundation will be conducting a free Hit For Health introductory tennis clinic Sept. 12 for juniors ages 11-17 at the Hale Koa Tennis Center from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

All equipment provided, including racquets. Clinic will be led by Dennis 'D' Conroy, USPTA professional and head tennis pro at Hale Koa Hotel.
