Thanks to Tyler Yamanouchi's feat of foot, Pearl City pulled off a 16-14 upset of 'Aiea Saturday night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association White football game at Pearl City.

Yamanouchi's 25-yarder with 19 seconds left gave the Chargers their first win (1-1) while handing Na Ali'i their first loss (2-1).

Yamanouchi, who played soccer as a youth, kicked field goals of 25, 45 and 25 yards.

The kick capped a wild finish in a game that was close throughout.

"It was pretty crazy," Yamanouchi said. "That (winning) play took so long because the coaches kept calling timeouts. Before the time out, they had a flag on them. Then something in the stands was happening so they had to wait for that."

Yamanouchi, a senior, admitted that he was "really nervous." But when it was time, he said, "I kept telling myself to calm down. Told myself to focus."

Yamanouchi called his successful kick "one of the happiest moments I've had. I actually always wanted to kick a game-winning field goal through my whole high school career. I wanted to experience it one time. I feel great. Don't know how to explain it."

Yamanouchi credits soccer (he started at 5) with giving him his leg strength. However, he said when he "got to high school, I stopped playing soccer and started playing basketball."

However, Yamanouchi hopes kicking will be in his future. "I really want to go to college as a kicker," he said.

"I actually think he can kick in the Division I level," Pearl City coach Kai Kamaka said, "(because of the) trajectory of his ball and his leg strength. He gets the ball high quick."

Yamanouchi's 45-yarder, according to Kamaka, "had 15 yards (extra) on the back end of that."

"In practice, he's hit 55 and 57 (yard field goals)."

The game was pretty entertaining throughout.

'Aiea, capitalizing on a Pearl City fumble, scored on Chucky Ka'ahanui's 3-yard run to make it 7-0 at halftime.

Pearl City took the lead at 10-7 in the third on Yamanouchi's 25-yard field goal and Marco Gonsales 45-yard interception return for a score.

'Aiea recaptured the lead in the fourth quarter when George Noga Jr. returned a fumble 58 yards, making it 14-10.

Pearl City's Ray Cooper returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to the 'Aiea 4. But numerous penalties pushed Pearl City to the 28, forcing the Chargers to kick a 45-yard field goal, making it 14-13 with slightly less than four minutes left in the game.

Kamaka said he was confident that the Chargers would get the ball back "because we were playing great defense and we felt we could stuff them and get the ball back and put the ball in range for our kicker to kick it. That was our game plan at that point."

The plan worked, sort of.

Pearl City stopped 'Aiea but then Na Ali'i stopped the Chargers on their next possession, forcing the Chargers to punt.

The punt pinned 'Aiea at its 6.

Kamaka said on the first play we "stuffed them for a 2-yard loss."

On the next play, Haden Concepcion caused a fumble that was recovered by Dennis King at the 'Aiea 1.

That set up a wild finish in which Pearl City penetrated the end zone multiple times only to be called for penalties (aiding the runner and offsides) and 'Aiea was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. The frantic finish put the ball on the 8, from where Yamanouchi connected.

Kamaka doesn't mind putting the ball in Yamanouchi's hands, or feet.

"He's pretty accurate," Kamaka said. "He's an all-around guy. He's our starting wideout, too."
