The 64th anniversary of the end of World War II was marked this morning aboard the Battleship Missouri Memorial, where Japanese officials signed the surrender documents concluding the war.
The ceremony, on the bow of the battleship, drew a crowd of about 150.
Among the guests was Art Arnold, of Mississippi, who was a crew member aboard the USS Missouri when the surrender documents were signed Sept. 2, 1945 in Tokyo Bay.
The Missouri has since been decommissioned and now serves as museum. Next month it is scheduled to go into drydock at Pearl Harbor for painting and repairs to its hull.
U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie and Assistant Secretary of Defense Wallace “Chip” Gregson gave speeches, and a rifle volley salute and the playing of taps were part of the ceremony.
