Hawaii golfers finish third

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i, which had never before finished better than 10th in the USGA Women's State Team Championship, captured third place yesterday at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Georgia won the championship with a three-day score of 4-over-par 436. Alabama, paced by a tournament record-tying 67 from 43-year-old Kathy Hartwiger, finished second, nine shots back.

Hawai'i shot a final-round 147 to finish at 447. University of Hawai'i graduate Xyra Suyetsugu shot a 74 and had a three-day total of 224. Punahou freshman Kacie Komoto, the event's youngest competitor at 14, shot her second straight 74 to finish at 228. Punahou junior Cyd Okino shot 83-240.

"We'll take that," said Suyetsugu, now the assistant women's golf coach at UH. "We came into this tournament not expecting anything. We were just trying to beat our goal, which was 10th."

Georgia's Dori Carter shot 69-214 to earn medalist honors. Suyetsugu was ninth and Komoto tied for 12th.
