One of the biggest draws at the annual Okinawan Festival is andagi (pronounced ahn-dah-GEE), a dense, slightly sweet doughnut. It’s not a stretch to say that some people go to the festival because of the andagi. Find a popular and traditional recipe from the Ige catering family on food editor Wanda Adams’ blog at http://myislandplate.honadvblogs.com.

If you’ve never tried an andadog, you’ll get your chance at the 27th Okinawan Festival this weekend.

For the andagi purists, you can find the traditional Okinawan doughnut on its own, while those in search of a non-battered dog can try the Oki Dog — a hot dog and chili wrapped in a tortilla with shredded shoyu pork and lettuce.
Of course, it’s not all about the food. The two-day event celebrates all things Okinawan, and this year you can play as you learn history and culture through the Okifest Passport game. If you get your passport stamped at every stop on a guided journey through the festival, you can enter to win Okinawan Festival T-shirts and other prizes.
The free festival runs from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow at Kapiçolani Park. For more information, call 676-5400 or visit www.okinawanfestival.com.
