Much of Kaua'i was without electricity for about a half-hour yesterday afternoon after a generating unit failed.

The outage began at about 3:20 p.m. after a generator at the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative went down, said Shelley Paik, KIUC spokeswoman. A backup unit was switched on, but it took about 15 minutes before it went on-line, she said.

Paik said "a large portion" of the utility's 33,000 customers were without power. Electricity was restored to all within a half-hour, she said.

The outage affected customers in Hanapepe, Koloa, Lihu'e, Kapa'a, Po'ipu, Lawa'i, Kalaheo, Princeville, Kilauea and Hanalei.

KELLOGG'S ITEMS MAY BE CONTAMINATED

State health officials are warning consumers not to eat Kellogg's Eggo Cinnamon Toast Waffles and Kellogg's Eggo Toaster Swirlz Cinnamon Roll Minis.

The recall covers certain packages of 10-count Kellogg's Eggo Cinnamon Toast Waffles and eight-count Kellogg's Eggo Toaster Swirlz Cinnamon Roll Minis.
