Trouble teaching your children to do their chores? Pick up after themselves? Do their homework? Don't worry, you're not alone. Parenting expert Kathy Bentley addresses these questions and others related to raising happy, healthy children in "Teaching Your Child to be Responsible," a free parenting skills workshop sponsored by the 3Y Ministry of Harris United Methodist Church. The workshop takes place 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 20 at the church, on the corner of Vineyard Boulevard and Nu'uanu Avenue. The event is geared toward parents, grandparents, babysitters and teachers. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance and child care will be provided. To register or for details: 536-9602.

LEARN HOW TO START YOUR OWN HOME GARDEN

There is plenty of tropical fruit readily available here in Hawai'i, making it easy to "eat local" most of the time. But wouldn't it be great — not to mention healthier and less expensive — to grow some vegetables for your family's table? On Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon at the O'ahu Urban Garden Center (955 Kamehameha Highway, Pearl City), you can learn to do just that. You'll have a chance to see vegetables growing in containers, observe several demonstrations and learn about the care and maintenance of these portable gardens. Just think: salsa, grown right in your own backyard!
