Red Sox pounce on Rays

Associated Press

BOSTON — Josh Beckett won his first game in a month, Alex Gonzalez led an eight-run third inning and Boston beat Tampa Bay, 9-1, yesterday in a game called by rain in the top of the sixth.

Beckett (15-6) allowed four hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings. The last hit was a double by Evan Longoria leading off the sixth, the final batter before the field was covered in a pouring rain. After a 55-minute delay, the game was called at 11:54 p.m.

"That's what I feel like I should do every time out," said Beckett, whose five-game winless stretch was his longest since July 29-Aug. 19, 2006. "You've just got to keep grinding every day and things end up working out."

The start of the game had been delayed for 2 hours, 5 minutes in which there was no rain most of the time.

"It was a long day," Boston manager Terry Francona said, "but it was a productive day."

Orioles 7, Yankees 3: Brian Roberts hit a grand slam in a six-run second inning and tied a franchise record with his 51st double as visiting Baltimore beat up A.J. Burnett and New York.

Brian Matusz (5-2) won his third straight start, while Burnett (11-9) allowed six runs in seven innings, dropping to 1-5 in his last nine starts.

Athletics 4, Twins 2: Brett Anderson (8-10) allowed two runs in seven innings, and Cliff Pennington had three hits with an RBI as Oakland beat host Minnesota.

Anderson retired 18 of 24 batters, including the final eight he faced, and didn't allow a walk for the fourth time this season.

White Sox 4, Angels 3, 10 innings: Scott Podsednik hit an inside-the-park homer and scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning on a wild pitch, leading Chicago over host Los Angeles.

Bobby Jenks (3-4) got credit for the victory, and Randy Williams got two outs for his first major league save after relieving Randy Williams with a runner at second.

Blue Jays 8, Tigers 6: Aaron Hill hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the ninth inning, and Saint Louis alum Brandon League (3-5) pitched two perfect innings of relief as Toronto beat host Detroit.

Rod Barajas, Vernon Wells and Marco Scutaro also homered for Toronto, which handed the AL Central-leading Tigers their fifth straight loss.

Indians 13, Royals 6: Jhonny Peralta drove in four runs, and rookie David Huff (10-9) allowed three runs over six innings as host Cleveland beat Kansas City.

Peralta had a two-run double in the fourth inning off Luke Hochevar (6-10) and his two-run single capped a five-run sixth that put Cleveland ahead 11-3.

Mariners 8, Rangers 3, 8 1/2 innings: Ichiro Suzuki had two hits to move within two of a record ninth-straight 200-hit season, and Seattle beat host Texas in a game called by rain with three outs remaining.

Suzuki doubled in the first and homered in the third before going hitless in his last three at-bats. He shares the mark with Willie Keeler, who had eight consecutive 200-hit seasons from 1984-1901.
