ANN ARBOR, Mich. — A dropped touchdown pass didn't deflate Tate Forcier. The Michigan freshman simply threw another one on the next play.
After LaTerryal Savory bobbled and dropped a go-ahead touchdown with just seconds remaining, Forcier hit Greg Mathews for a 5-yard score with 11 seconds left, lifting the Wolverines to a 38-34 win over No. 18 Notre Dame yesterday.
"It will go down in history as one of the greatest games in the Michigan-Notre Dame rivalry," Mathews said. "I'm glad I got a chance to play in it."
Armando Allen ran for a touchdown and got the 2-point conversion on a nifty Statue of Liberty play with 5:13 left after Jimmy Clausen threw his third touchdown pass to give the Fighting Irish (1-1) the lead, but Notre Dame's defense could not deny Forcier and the Wolverines (2-0).
"This is a very disappointing, disheartening loss," Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said.
A season after losing a school-record nine games, Michigan's Rich Rodriguez has college football's winningest program at 2-0 for the first time since 2006 with a rout of Western Michigan and an emotional win over the rival Irish, whose winning percentage ranks second in the nation — behind Michigan's.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Tim Tebow completed 15 of 24 passes for 237 yards and four touchdown passes, and also ran for a score as the Gators (2-0) pounded the Trojans (0-2) in their final tuneup before beginning Southeastern Conference play.
"The season starts now," said receiver David Nelson as the Gators will prepare for their Southeastern Conference opener against Tennessee on Saturday in Gainesville.

The Longhorns looked ready to be lassoed until taking a 13-10 lead just before halftime, although their defense had a great afternoon against a spread offense in preparation for next weekend's showdown with Texas Tech.
"I thought our defense pitched a shutout," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "... But we've still got a lot to work to do and it's fun when you can win 41-10 and still feel like you've got a lot of things to fix."

NO. 10 CALIFORNIA 59, EASTERN WASHINGTON 7
BERKELEY, Calif. — Jahvid Best rushed for 144 yards and scored two touchdowns to make sure the Golden Bears (2-0) would avoid a letdown against the Eagles (1-1).
