A repair crew works on one of at least three utility poles on Kailua Road damaged in an early-morning vehicle accident. Traffic in both directions at the scene, which was near the entrance to Kailua, was blocked so repairs could be made.

A portion of Kailua Road heading into Kailua was closed for hours today after an accident involving a van and a utility pole.

Kailua Road was closed at 6 this morning between Ulumanu and Hamakua drives.
Police originally believed two Hawaiian Electric Co. poles had been brought down and that a transformer had blown.
But HECO spokesman Darren Pai said the van hit a Hawaiian Telcom pole, which leaned over and became entangled in the guy-wires of a HECO pole. Pai said there was no blown transformer.
Police said the road would be reopened around 2 p.m.
