A pedestrian on Maui died in a car accident last night on Kaahumanu Highway near Lono Avenue. Michael Owen, 52, was crossing Kaahumanu outside of a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a Dodge four-door sedan driven by a 45-year-old Makawao man. Owen died at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Speed was determined to be a factor in the crash. The use of drugs or alcohol still have not been determined as the investigation continues.
This was Maui’s 14th traffic fatality for the year, the same amount as this time in 2008. It was the third fatality for the month.
