The art of poi pounding will be among the demonstrations at Saturday's Mission Houses Museum "Magic at the Mission Houses," during which costumed figures will stroll the lawn, musicians will play period music, and guests can visit the Frame House and see the Print Shop in action. A poi supper will be served and an auction of special events on the museum grounds will raise funds for the museum (among the auction items: a chance to dine in the Frame House). The event is 5:30 to 10 p.m.
They're recommending elegant or early-19th-century attire, with lei. Proceeds will help maintain the museum's three historic buildings, assist in the preservation of the museum collection and finance changing exhibits. Tickets are $250 per person with tables of 10 also available. Reservations are required: 447-3922.
ANNUAL FESTIVAL
FEAST ON PORTUGUESE DELIGHTS AT FESTA
Festa! It's the Portuguese word for festival or party, and it's the title of the annual celebration and fundraiser sponsored by the Hawaii Council on Portuguese Heritage. It's coming up this Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at McCoy Pavilion, with lots of Portuguese food — bean soup, malasadas, codfish stew, sausage hot dogs, vinha d'ahlhos and more.
Also planned are cultural displays, a genealogy booth, entertainment, video presentations on the history of the Portuguese in Hawai'i, a country store and a variety of vendors. Admission is a $3 donation. Information: 845-1616.
