'Dream' a two-fisted drama of triumph

Special to The Advertiser
The new drama "Dream" airing Mondays and Tuesdays starting next week features an all-star cast, including Ju Jin-mo ("A Love," "Fashion '70s" "200lb. Beauty"), singer-turned-actress Son Dam-bi, and Kim Bum ("Boys Over Flowers").
Ju Jin-mo attended the Honolulu International Film Festival in 2007 for a screening of his film "A Love" with acclaimed director Kwak Kyung-taek. Ju Jin-mo has several successful films and TV series on his resume and this year he plays the king of Goryeo in "A Frozen Flower," which also stars Cho In-sung. "A Frozen Flower" will be screened next month at HIFF.
"Dream" is about Nam "Jerry" Je-il (Ju Jin-mo), a cutthroat go-getter who has achieved fame and wealth as one of the top sports agents in South Korea. But when the company he works for, Super Star Corp., is implicated in a drug scandal involving one of its top athletes, Je-il is forced to take the fall for his ruthless boss, Kang Kyung-tak. But Je-il refuses to go down without a fight, turning his boss into a mortal enemy. The once high-profile sports agent is stripped of his money and clout overnight, and he must build himself back up while also regaining the humanity he discarded on his climb to the top.
Desperate to find marketable athletes not already signed by Kang Kyung-tak, Je-il devises an elaborate scheme to sign an amateur boxer. He's successful, but days before the boxer's debut, his jaw is shattered by a young waiter at a nightclub during a drunken brawl. To Je-il's surprise, the waiter is a former pickpocket, Lee Jang-seok (Kim Bum), a k a Rocks, whom he once ran into. Seeing young Jang-seok's potential, Je-il convinces him to take up professional mixed martial arts in exchange for not pressing charges.
Unable to find any gyms or sponsors in Seoul, Je-il and Jang-seok talk their way into a gym named Dream on the outskirts of Busan, run by Park Byung-sam, a former Asian boxing champion. And a bizarre love triangle forms when the odd couple Je-il and Jang-seok get to know the gym owner's tomboyish yet beautiful daughter So-yeon (Son Dam-bi).
Will Je-il realize his dream of climbing back to the top and avenging himself against his evil former boss? Will Jang-seok realize his dream of getting off the streets and becoming a champion? And who will So-yeon choose?
"Dream" is a stirring drama of redemption and triumph that will make you get up and cheer for its characters, who refuse to give up even in the face of overwhelming odds.
