Hawai'i County's coffers are running lower than usual because so many landowners didn't pay property tax bills due Aug. 20.
The delinquency rate has risen to 7.5 percent, said Stan Sitko, county tax administrator.
"It's nearly double (past years), which is pretty consistent with what's been happening across the country," Sitko said.
Hawai'i County's delinquency rate was 5.6 percent during the fiscal year that ended June 30, up from 4.5 percent the previous year, Finance Director Nancy Crawford said.
The county recently billed landowners $120,249,129 in new taxes, Sitko said. As of Monday, the county had collected $111,232,319, or 92.5 percent of what was due.
