Farrington overcame a 7-0 halftime deficit and rallied past Kailua, 17-7, last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association football action at Roosevelt's Tiki Vasconcellos Stadium.
The Governors, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division.
The Surfriders fell to 2-4, 1-3.
Kailua lost more than just the game — it lost three players to injury, including two potential season-enders.
Starting linebacker Calen Friel suffered a left knee injury, which Surfriders coach Gary Rosolowich fears might be a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Starting quarterback Kahaku Iaea left the game later in the second quarter with an injured right (throwing) shoulder; Rosolowich said X-rays will reveal the seriousness of that injury.
And late in the fourth quarter, another linebacker — Martin Lagazo — was taken away by ambulance after suffering a neck injury. He was moving his limbs and raised his hand as he was carried into the ambulance.
"I think he'll be OK," Rosolowich said.
The injuries put a damper on what was a strong first-half performance.
Kailua held Farrington to 117 total yards in the first two quarters, and took a 7-0 lead after Clint Aina's 19-yard touchdown scamper and Dustin Kalai's extra point with 5:21 remaining in the half.
The Governors also hurt themselves, with four penalties for 51 yards. That included a 15-yard personal foul and 21-yard holding penalty after they had gained first-and-goal from the 8 late in the second quarter.
They ended up punting from the 36.
"(The flood of penalties) was a carry-over from last week," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said, referring to a 41-0 victory over McKinley that included 13 penalties for 153 yards. "It's something we need to correct."
The Governors opened the second half with an 11-play, 56-yard scoring drive capped by Harry Tuimaseve's 1-yard run. Ekolu Kaina's PAT tied the game at 7-7.
Farrington pooched the ensuing kickoff and the Govs' Kula Solomon recovered the loose ball on the Surfers' 25. After a holding penalty, Farrington scored two plays later on Jared Hakuole's 34-yard TD pass to Alvin Fa'amausili.
Kaina's extra point made it 14-7 with 6:40 left in the third quarter, and he added a 42-yard field goal with 9:22 remaining in the game.
