The 90-foot smokestack at the Children's Discovery Center in Kaka'ako is getting a fresh coat of paint — and some attitude.

"We're thrilled to finally be able to paint our smokestack," Liane Usher, director of exhibits and programs at the center, said yesterday morning. "It's a landmark in Kaka'ako."

Crews from Aloha Painting Co. have been working in scaffolding encasing the smokestack since Monday.

When they are done, Usher said, the effect will be of confetti spilling from the smokestack.

"Since everything in the center is about imagination and dreaming big dreams ... we wanted it to be really colorful and playful," Usher said.
