Passenger in critical condition following early morning crash near Wahiawa

A 24-year-old man is in critical condition after the Cadillac Escalade he was riding in collided with a utility pole on Kamehameha Highway near Whitmore Avenue.

According to police, the SUV was headed toward Wahiawa around 5:30 a.m. when the driver fell asleep and the vehicle veered off the road.
The passenger was pinned in the vehicle and it took firefighters 30 minutes to free him using a pair of extrication tools. Emergency Medical Services paramedics treated the man while firefighters worked to extricate him.
He was later taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.
The driver, a 26-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Wahiawa General Hospital. He was arrested for negligent injury and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash. It is not known if speed was also a factor.
Police said both men are military personnel.
