ISLE FILE
Miyajima in 33rd at qualifier

Advertiser Staff

Maui's Shayna Miyajima shot a 2-over-par 74 yesterday in the opening round of the second LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Plantation Golf & Country Club in Venice, Fla.

Miyajima is tied for 33rd and six shots off the lead held by Liebelei Lawrence of Greece. Honolulu's Mari Chun shot 85 and is 109th.

The field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties after today's second round. After four rounds, the top 30 players and ties advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, Dec. 2 to 6 in Florida.

The top 30 finishers and ties from this week's qualifier will join the top 30 players from the first LPGA sectional, including Hawai'i's Lehua Wise and Ayaka Kaneko, in the final stage. Making up the rest of the field will be current LPGA members attempting to improve priority standing and eligible Duramed Futures Tour players, who automatically advanced based on their position on the 2009 season-ending money list.

SURFING

BARTELS, HO ADVANCE

Hawai'i surfers Melanie Bartels and Coco Ho advanced to the third round of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic women's contest yesterday.

The opening round of the contest was run in 2- to 3-foot waves at Dee Why, New South Wales, Australia.

Bartels had the best heat of the day, receiving a total score of 15.25 (out of 20) for her two best waves. Her best wave received a score of 8.25.

"I'd been eyeing that little barrel out there," said Bartels, who is from Wai'anae. "I was just waiting and that wave came to me and I was able to find that little barrel which gave me the good score."

Ho, who is in her rookie season on the women's tour, upset former world champion Sofia Mulanovich in the first round.

As first-round winners, Bartels and Ho advanced directly to the third round.

Alana Blanchard of Kaua'i did not win her first-round heat, and will have to surf in the second round.

The contest is the third of seven stops on the 2009 ASP Women's World Tour.
