Kaiser has new football coach

Former Saint Louis All-State offensive lineman William Lobendahn has been named head football coach at Kaiser High School, Cougars athletic director Rodney Iwasaki said.

Lobendahn scheduled his first meeting with the team yesterday afternoon.

He replaces Pat Samsonas, who stepped down after five seasons in order to spend more time with family.

Lobendahn was selected to The Advertiser's 1997 All-State first team as a senior. He went to play college ball at Virginia Union. He was chosen to participate in the 2004 East Coast Bowl, which featured top NCAA Division II and DIII players froom across the Mid-Atlantic region.

MAUI COMBINE SET

The Maui Football Combine for current freshmen, sophomores and juniors will be held 9 a.m. May 1 at Maui High School.

The combine will feature testing in the 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, short shuttle and L-shuttle and will provide a complete physical picture of each player. The combine's goal is to test the athletes then to post the information on the internet for interested coaches to view and evaluate potential recruits.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

'CLASH OF TITANS' AT PUNAHOU NEXT WEEK

Defending boys volleyball state champs Punahou and Hawai'i Baptist will play two Newport Beach, Calif., powers next week at Punahou.

On April 8, defending Division II state champ HBA will face Corona del Mar at 5 p.m., followed by defending DI state champion Punahou vs. Newport Harbor at 7. On April 9, Hawai'i Baptist will play Newport Harbor at 5 followed by Punahou vs. Corona del Mar at 7.

In ESPN Rise's latest Fab 50, Punahou is ranked No. 1, HBA is No. 19, Newport Harbor is No. 30 and Corona del Mar is No. 46.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

MA'A, MANU-OLEVAO AMONG TOP SOPHS

Kamehameha's Misty Ma'a and Punahou's Tai Manu-Olevao were recognized as among the top 79 sophomore girls players in the nation by www.PrepVolleyball.com

Ma'a helped Kamehameha win the state championship last fall and Manu-Olevao helped Punahou win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

VIELA SELECTED TO 'TEAM TAURASI'

Lahainaluna junior point guard Maiki Viela has been selected to play for the California Storm Basketball Club's "Team Taurasi," the most elite of the Storm's travel teams.

Nike-sponsored Team Taurasi will compete in some of the most competitive club basketball events in the country, including the Nike Nationals (North Augusta, S.C.), Boo Williams Invitational (Hampton, Va.); Nike Summer Showcase (Chicago) and Nike Oasis Invitational (Phoenix).

Viela helped the Lunas win their first state title this past season.
