Auto racing: 15-year-old girl dies in speedway crash

Advertiser Staff

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A 15-year-old girl has died after the speedway car she was driving crashed into a concrete wall at a dirt-track meet on New Zealand's North Island.

Samantha Mouat was driving in a ministocks event at the Kaikohe Speedway on Saturday when she lost control of her vehicle. Members of Mouat's family were among the crowd who saw the crash.

Ambulance service spokesman Keith Hall said paramedics were quickly on the scene but Mouat could not be revived.

Debbie Beadle, secretary of the Kaikohe Car Club, said police were investigating the accident but the cause appeared to be driver error.

The legal driving age in New Zealand is 15, enabling a person to qualify for a racing license if they have a road license.
