Hawaii governor receives threat letter from extremist group

Associated Press

HONOLULU — Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle is one of many governors nationwide who has received a threatening letter from an extremist group.

The Republican governor's spokesman confirmed Friday that the letter was sent to the governor's office, but he did not elaborate.

According to federal documents obtained by The Associated Press, dozens of governors across the country received letters this week warning them that if they didn't leave office within three days, they would be removed.

The letters have been sent by Guardians of the Free Republics, a group that says it wants to "restore America" by peacefully dismantling parts of government.

The FBI has said it expects all 50 governors to eventually receive the group's letters.
