A man, who appeared in his 60s, died of an apparent drowning Saturday at Makapuu Beach Park, officials said.

The incident occurred at 8:40 a.m., said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's Emergency Services Department. When lifeguards came on duty this morning, they saw bystanders pulling a man out of the water, Cheplic said.

Lifeguards performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to a nearby hospital, Cheplic said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The surf was about 2-3 feet and choppy, Cheplic said.
