Laan leads Hawaii runners

Advertiser Staff and News Services

More than 30 runners from Hawai'i — led by 26-year-old Brandon Laan and 75-year-old Kit Smith — completed yesterday's Boston Marathon, the world's oldest annual and probably the most prestigious marathon.

The 114th event was won by Kenya's Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot, who broke the course record with a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, 52 seconds. Ethiopia's Teyba Erkesso took the women's title in 2:26:11, sprinting to the tape to win by three seconds over Russia's Tatyana Pushkareva.

Cheruiyot was 82 seconds faster than the course record set in 2006 by four-time winner Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, who's not related. The 2010 champions each earned $150,000 and a golden olive wreath from the city of Marathon, Greece; Cheruiyot gets an extra $25,000 for the course record.

More than 26,000 runners left Hopkinton yesterday with temperatures in the high 40s and a headwind of 13 mph. The air warmed slightly during the day — good running weather.

Laan, who moved to Hawai'i four years ago from Canada, was Hawai'i's first finisher and 54th overall at 2:28:13. 'Aiea's Belinda Wray, 32, was the Isles' first women's finisher and 543rd overall at 3:20:10. Kit Smith, 75, was Hawai'i's lone medalist, taking third in his age group with a time of 4:18:03.

Running in his first Boston and in front of his family who traveled to watch him, Laan said "the experience was phenomenal."

Laan said he was on pace of meeting his goal of going 2:20 or under.

"I went through the first half at 1:10. (I was) on pace to run 2:22," said Laan, who coaches cross country at Hawai'i Pacific University and track and field at Punahou School.

But Laan said he ran the last 2k in 10 minutes.

"It was rough," he said. "They put me in a wheelchair and took me to the (medical) tent. ... I was pretty incoherent when I came to the line."

Laan said he recovered after about 15 minutes but is still feeling the effect. "Even now, I'm pretty tired," he said when contacted hours after he finished.

"That course definitely takes its toll," he added. "I have a lot of respect for that course."

Laan said Heartbreak Hill wasn't a problem for him. "It was the downhills that got me. My quads just gave out ... but the fan support carries you through.

"It was like nothing I've ever done before."

Smith was running his fourth Boston and finished in the top three in his age group for the first time.

"That's a dream come true to win an age group award. I was pretty excited," said Smith, a former Honolulu Advertiser business writer.

"I was hoping to do better. In my prime — eight years ago — I did a 3:38" even though he said he trained just as hard.

But that time didn't earn him an award. That's because, he said, "The other old geezers tend to drop off over the years and I stuck with it."
