An off-duty Honolulu police officer has been charged with driving under the influence after he allegedly hit and injured a 61-year-old woman in a crosswalk Saturday morning.

Officer Boyd Kamikawa, 53, was not in a police vehicle when the accident occurred at A'ala and North Kukui streets around 7 a.m. Saturday, according to police.

The woman suffered a broken left arm and left wrist and was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Kamikawa is a 23-year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department and works in downtown's District One.

He was released on $500 bail.

Police have opened criminal and internal investigations, Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman Capt. Letha DeCaires said yesterday.
