Groundbreaking set for Hilo Target, Safeway stores

Advertiser Staff

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled tomorrow in Hilo for a Target and a Safeway store to be built on land leased from the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.

The roughly 120,000-square-foot Target and the 60,000-square-foot Safeway are projected to open in 2011.
Target's store is expected to employ about 300 people, and another 200 are expected to be hired by Safeway.
The 15.5-acre parcel is near Hilo's largest shopping center, Prince Kuhio Plaza, and adjacent to a Home Depot store that opened in 2004 on land also leased from DHHL.
