Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i police yesterday said a 31-year-old Lāwa'i man who was allegedly involved in Kaua'i's first fatal crash of the year was arrested Wednesday morning at police headquarters in Līhu'e.

Police said Norman Bukoski Jr. was charged with drunken driving, first-degree negligent homicide and first-degree negligent injury.

Tomas Garcia, 32, of Kapa'a, was killed in the Jan. 19 crash on Kaumuali'i Highway near the entrance to Kahili Mountain Park. His passenger, a 27-year-old man from Kīlauea, was injured.

Bukoski was released pending completion of the investigation, police said.

Police earlier said Bukoski was traveling west in a GMC pickup on Kaumuali'i Highway at 10:16 p.m. when his truck crossed the center line and collided head-on into the eastbound Ford truck driven by Garcia.

Bukoski was the only person in the GMC truck.
