HONOLULU — The board of trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs has approved more than $2 million in community grants for 35 projects aimed at bettering the lives of Native Hawaiians.

OHA chairwoman Haunani Apoliona said Monday that the state agency is pleased to continue its support for nonprofit community groups that work to make a difference for Native Hawaiians in the midst of a struggling economy.
She says the money will fund projects ranging from mobile health screening for diabetes to substance-abuse rehabilitation.
OHA says consideration was given to projects that help ensure Native Hawaiians have continued opportunities in health care, human services, education, housing, economic development, native rights and cultural preservation.
