Legendary Mavericks Surf Contest to be held Saturday

Advertiser Staff and News Services

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — Massive waves are headed for the West Coast, making conditions ripe for the Mavericks Surf Contest this weekend.

Twenty-four of the world's best big wave surfers — including the North Shore's Dave Wassel, Brock Little and Jamie Sterling — have been summoned to California's Central Coast to compete Saturday.

California's Greg Long, who won the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau meet at Waimea Bay in December, is among the invitees.
The contest will take place off the coast of Half Moon Bay at a break known as Mavericks.

In previous years, the contest has been called by organizers, who decided if the conditions are right then put the surfers on 24-hour notice. The last Mavericks contest took place in January 2008.

But this year, for the first time, the contest's participants, who are scattered around the globe were allowed to vote on whether to hold the contest.
