Three share Hawaii Pearl Open lead

Nicholas Mason, Sung Yeol Kwon and Akinori Tani shared the lead at 5-under-par 67 yesterday after the first round of the 32nd Hawai'i Pearl Open at Pearl Country Club.
John Ellis, Toshinori Muto and Katsumi Kubo were a shot back at 68. Defending champion Jesse Mueller and nine others were two shots off the lead at 69.

HAWAI'I EARNS SPLIT
Katie Grimes blasted a three-run homer, Kelly Majam hit a two-run shot, and Kaia Parnaby struck out 10 in five innings as Hawai'i beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 9-0, in the second day of the Paradise Classic softball tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Texas A&M-CC fell to 1-3.
In the second game, Ashley Chinn fired a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts as No. 10 Stanford beat Hawai'i, 2-0.
Amanda Tauali'i had the lone hit for Hawai'i (1-2) against Stanford (3-0).
UH-HILO TAKES TWO
The Hawai'i-Hilo women's softball team opened the season with two victories in pool play of the Las Vegas Invitational yesterday. The Vulcans beat Fort Lewis College 7-3 in eight innings and Colorado School of Mines 5-3.
In the first game, Sarah Weisskopf picked up the victory and smacked a three-run home-run in the eight to seal the win. In the second game, Jessica Schatz hit a two-run home run.
BASKETBALL
UH-HILO MEN WIN
Justin Smith scored 20 points and Andrew Gipson added 17 points and 12 rebounds as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Dominican (Calif.), 62-59, last night in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at Hilo.

BRIGHAM YOUNG-HAWAI'I 80, CHAMINADE 59
Tsung-Hsien Chang scored 20 points to lead the host Seasiders (13-5, 7-2) past the Silverswords (7-11, 4-5) in a men's game. Rory Patterson and Lucas Alves added 14 points apiece, and Marques Whippy 12 for BYUH. Waly Coulibaly led Chaminade with 12 points.
HAWAI'I-HILO 83, DOMINICAN (CALIF.) 72
Kirsty Imai scored 17 points, Natalie Mata 16, Hina Kimitete 14 and Hotia Vaaimamao 12 as the Vulcans (7-14, 4-6) beat the visiting Lady Penguins (5-15, 2-7).
BRIGHAM YOUNG-HAWAI'I 90, CHAMINADE 68
Mahina Gago scored 23 points to lead the host Seasiders (8-11, 4-5) over the Silverswords (1-16, 0-9) in a women's game. Richelle Fenenbock scored 17 and Felisita Ika 14 for BYUH. Megan Kamehiro led Chaminade with 16 points.
