Mother and daughter rescued from North Kohala waters

Advertiser Staff

A mother and daughter in inflatable kayaks were rescued this afternoon after wind conditions made it impossible for them to return to shore, officials said.

Firefighters were called in after a bystander with a a kayak attempted to help the 57-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter were caught in a wind line about a 1/2 mile from shore at Mahukona State Park on the Big Island, Hawaii County firefighters said.
The mother and daughter were fatigued from trying to come back to shore at 2:57 p.m. Firefighters used a helicopter to deploy a rescue swimmer and a rescue net was lowered. Both were brought to Lapakahi State Park uninjured and taken back to Makukona State park.
