Wildlife refuge to expand
The James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge will expand by about 1,000 acres thanks to a $22 million appropriation secured by Sen. Daniel Inouye and Hawaiçis congressional delegates.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service had sought the land to increase the protection of endangered Hawaiian water birds' habitat and for flood control measures.
At a ceremony today to celebrate the refuge expansion Inouye said he has also secured $6 million to address flooding issues at Kahuku High and Intermediate School, which regularly floods during heavy rain.
