Defending champions gain top seeds

Defending champions Konawaena and Moloka'i have been awarded the top seeds for this week's Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Championships.

Konawaena (10-0), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, is the top seed in Division I. Maui Interscholastic League champion Lahainaluna (14-0) is seeded second; Punahou (11-1), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, is No. 3 and O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion Farrington (15-1) is seeded fourth.
All seeded teams have a first-round bye and start play in Wednesday's quarterfinals. First-round action begins tomorrow at McKinley and Radford. Thursday's and Friday's games will be played in the Blaisdell Arena. The championship game is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.
Moloka'i (10-0), the MIL champion, is the top seed in Division II. OIA champion Kaimuki (13-1) is seeded second, ILH champion Sacred Hearts (15-0) is seeded third and BIIF champion Kamehameha-Hawai'i (9-5) is seeded fourth.
First-round games begin tomorrow at Farrington and Kalani. Friday's fifth-place, third-place and championship games will be held at the Blaisdell Arena. The championship game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
