Aiea Gym reopens following vandalism

Advertiser Staff

Aiea Gym at Aiea District Park has been reopened following repair work because of vandalism that occurred last November, Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced Tuesday.

The gym’s floor sustained major damage after it was flooded with water from a fire hose after a break-in during the early morning of Nov. 8, 2009. The gym was closed for one month while the lighting system was replaced. The vandalism had occurred the day before the facility was scheduled to reopen.
The mayor’s office said drying, dehumidifying and monitoring the gym floor cost $22,870. Patching and sealing the floor and applying a new coating cost $4,900.
The closure forced the relocation of international badminton and gymnastics tournaments, disrupted basketball league play and displaced hundreds of gym users.
