A man from Spokane, Washington, has drowned after swimming off the coast of Maui.

Police say 54-year-old Daniel Barney was pronounced dead Wednesday at Maui Memorial Medical Center after he was pulled from the ocean near Black Rock.
They say officers were called to the scene by two bystanders. Barney was being pulled from the water at the time.
Police say attempts to resuscitate the man failed.
