Woman dies from her wounds in Big Island murder-suicide, police say

A Hilo woman who was critically injured Wednesday night in what Big Island police are calling a murder-suicide in Piihonua died from gunshot wounds this morning at Hilo Medical Center. Police had identified her as Jolene Medeiros, 24.
Police said Harry Batalona, 28, fatally shot himself and after shooting Medeiros several times Wednesday night in Piihonua.
South Hilo Patrol officers went to Batalona's Manaolana Place home just after 7 p.m. Wednesday following a report of a shooting.
Batalona was found shot in the head and Medeiros, described by police as his
estranged female companion, had multiple gunshot wounds.
Fire Department personnel took both of them to Hilo Medical Center, where
Batalona was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Medeiros was listed in critical condition, then pronounced dead this morning.
Preliminary autopsy results indicated Batalona died of a single, self-inflicted gun shot to the head, police said.
